They usually appeared as beautiful maidens, less often as old and repulsive women. Rusalkas were particularly active during the new moon, when they lured young men and women, often unaware of the danger. An encounter with them usually ended tragically – their tickles were deadly, and the unfortunates died of laughter. Other times, they could dance with their victim until they collapsed from exhaustion.
